“Finding Frat”

bro. occasio gee posted a topic on thecause1914 group today by this same title. it made me think about feel good stories i had about chasing frat down or running into brothers at random places and this one came to mind.

it must have been the spring of 2002 and i was working in emeryville, ca which is just outside of berkeley. something took me away from my usual route home and i decided to stop by wells fargo to use the ATM. traffic was heavier than normal and i came to a 3 way stop when i noticed a Sigma plate on the oncoming car. it was a hot late afternoon so windows were down and i gave him a “what’s up frat!” as he passed by. the brother, whose name i can’t recall right now, was quite surprised (oh gee i wonder why??? lol), told me to pull over and i motioned him over to the wells’ parking lot. he got out, gave me the grip, and we exchanged information. what really made this moment stand out for me was that he goes “hey do you have any pari?” and me, a good 9 years removed from crossing, was like “no not on me.” so this kind brother tells me to hold on, while he jumped into this trunk and gave me something of his. in fact, i still have that khaki visor with the PBS letters on them to this day. so if you’re reading this, and you remember me in the silver convertible BMW (no comments on the wife’s girlie car. that’s waaaay too easy), drop me a line.

this is why i love our Fraternity. feel free to share yours!

ABZ Chapter at top listed Wingate University, NC

Bro. Reggie Ramseur posted this on thecause1914 last week and I’d been meaning to repost it here.

This just in. Thought I would share some positive info regarding our brothers of Phi Beta Sigma as they contribute to the success of their Universities and College campuses. Universities look to Greek letter organizations to help promote the social and community life. Wingate University was looking for this very benefit to further market their university to an African American population. Organizations were clambering for a seat at Wingate University in 1998. Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma battled out the final round in an effort to win the chance to charter the first ever Black Fraternity or Black Greek letter organization of any kind at Wingate University. Needless to say, Phi Beta Sigma was ‘chosen’ by the students as the ‘organization of choice’ thus allowing the brothers of the Blue and white family to colonize on the yard.

Wingate University, Wingate NC, now home of the Alpha Beta Zeta Chapter “The Chapter That Never Sleeps” of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. makes the top list for Colleges and Universities.

Wingate University sits just 45 minutes east of Charlotte, NC and 30 minutes from Salisbury, NC in the Southeastern Region of Phi Beta Sigma.

ABZ Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is the FIRST and ONLY Black Greek letter Fraternity on the Wingate University campus. ABZ chapter was founded on April 1st, 1999. ABZ chapter is very unique in that it lives among neighboring established chapters that age from approximately 74 years old (a Mother Chapter – Upsilon Chapter at Livignstone College and its Jr sibling, Alpha Epsilon, at Johnson C. Smith University – Charlotte NC) to 20 years older (Rho Beta, UNC-Greensboro, Rho Gamma – UNC – Charlotte) . ABZ chapter has been recognized numerous times for its continuous involvement in community service. ABZ chapter easily out paces all other Greek letter organizations at Wingate in its pursuit of provisioning excellent community based programming assistance.

Susquehanna University

On Saturday December 8, 2007 Darryl Williams, Brad Leak and John Leak (Harrisburg, PA Chapter) ventured out to Susquehanna University after a Preliminary Meeting Held with there by IED Marco McMillian.

We met with 9 Young College Freshmen who themselves represented over 20% of the African American Male Population on Campus. These 9 men (organized by a legacy nephew from KBS-”BROOKLAND” (name to be provided when I go to my bag) and a Young Man from Newark, NJ) are interested NOW in PBS. Here is the kicker. Susquehanna University will be paying ALL Fees associated with Chartering this chapter in addition to initiation fees for all involved! WOW

If that is not enough, there are 5-6 faculty members (2 white) who wish to charter a Grad Chapter in conjunction with the formation of the Under Graduate Chapter! Again the University is footing the bill. One of the white gentlemen is the DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS for the University! There was a 3rd White Brother but he pledged a white org on campus and we told him he did not apply for membership under our constitution. He was upset!

OK, you heard enough to be pleased for today right!

WELL Phi Beta Sigma at Susquehanna U has a HOUSE! A House where the letters P B S will be hung with pride!

Now what we need are some Penn State Collegians to come and participate in the History Sessions. We don’t want to make these Brothers and leave them out on an Island.

The Harrisburg Chapter has GREATLY been assisting in this process. KUDOS!

Sigma Traveling Museum for Centennial

Earlier this week on thecause1914, Bro. Warren Galloway, Jr. made this great suggestion about having the Sigma Museum travel from city to city leading up to the centennial. Let’s support Bro. Galloway any way we can.
Here comes another one of my ideal concerning raising money for the fraternity and extending an olive branch to our national officers.

Please take a look at what the AKA are doing around the country for their centennial. They have a traveling AKA exhibit going to different cities throughout the county. This is the Detroit visit.

What if an olive branch was extended to our national officers to allow the Sigma museum to become an officially sanctioned traveling museum exhibit for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s centennial celebration!

The goal is to raise money for the centennial celebration and the Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Here is how I propose for it to work.

Going from 2009 to 2014, almost every week during this period, a chapter will be the host city for the museum exhibit for a weekend. Like in Detroit, all the alumni chapters in Detroit (Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma, Xi Beta Sigma, and Nu Alpha Sigma) would jointly host this exhibit as a fund raiser at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American history. The profits from this event would be split between the host chapter(s) 1/3, national centennial celebration/Sigma Beta Foundation 1/3, Sigma Museum (to cover all costs to transport museum and pay for brothers’ expenses and as a fund raiser). An orchid ball, founder’s day celebration, sigma beta or social action or educational fund raiser, would be held at the location where the exhibit will be based.(at a museum or African-American center or city hall or other high profile locations)

This is a win-win situation for all involved. This would get the fraternity’s history out into the community; could be used as a recruitment tool; another way to market the achievements of the fraternity; etc. I don’t see how hosting an exhibit would lose money. The exhibit could also be hosted by undergraduate chapters.

The hook to the success of this exhibit is that each host chapter would have to obtain corporate sponsorship.

I believe a traveling museum exhibit for our centennial will leave a profound affect on our communities and could be a catalyst for the rebirth of the fraternity on a national basis (most local chapters are already successful in the communities; this is why I know the exhibit will be just as successful)

Let me hear brothers’ opinions about this proposal. Also, we would have to recruit volunteers to assist with the museum in order for this effort to happen.
